ABOUT: Maria Dominguez’s career of public art-making, community mural,  and private commissions has gained her the respect and recognition of her contemporaries all over New York City. In 2002, the MTA commissioned "El-Views", where sixteen of her original paintings were transformed into dazzling stained-glass jewels and permanently installed in the Chauncey Street station on the J line. She has done countless murals throughout the city and has successfully integrated her mural-making techniques with her arts education experience. In fact, as head of El Museo del Barrio's Museum Education Department for seven years, Dominguez honed her specialized method of creating murals collectively while working with students of all ages. Most recently, she has turned to her computer and created a series of digital images which can be found on her website.

COMMUNITY VISIONS: Says Dominguez, "While working at El Museo del Barrio, I dreamed of creating tours of its museums, galleries, [and] music which would culminate in a dinner at a local café or restaurant. These would have to be well-orchestrated by a united community willing to work towards their legacy." She sees the vibrant artistic community and the historical value of El Barrio as having great potential to attract tourists and create jobs in the area.
